It need not take 700 years to happen. The main problem is lack of education. If everyone had a modern education (hopefully including cosmology and evolution), then they would realize that some of the stuff in the Hadith and even the Koran simply isn't true. If part of their scriptures isn't literally true, then that means that the rest could be taken with a grain of salt and considered as allegory. That would include the stuff about fighting the infidels.
It does say in the Koran that everything in the Koran is literally true. It also says that the sun sets into a mud puddle in the west. I believe that there's a story in the Hadith about Muhammad jumping way up and slicing the moon (an object the size of a soccer ball) in two with his scimitar. But as it is now, uneducated people live in a magical mindset where they're easily led.
But will Islamic societies ever permit their members to obtain a modern education? Probably not -- it would be a threat to the control that their leaders hold over them, especially over women and children.
Sorry about that. That last post was from me. LiveJournal has returned to signing me off whenever I go offline. Anyway, I doubt very much if Islamic societies will ever permit their members to have modern educations, certainly when they are children, unless something happened to destroy the control of powerful members of those communities over their people.
