The only Alien scenario I've ever seen that worked was one where they came here because they needed more food, and they turned the earth into an agricultural planet, being able to eat the same food stuffs as we could, and they pretty much made everyone farmers, or support efforts to farmers.

And the effort to get rid of the aliens instead turned into an effort to just have the same rights as the aliens once it was realized that they needed our food so badly that there was no way they'd ever leave, they'd kill us all first before that happened.

I always thought that was a much more realistic story line.
