She's right. He is the last, the very last, and he represents all the other WW 1 veterans whose deaths came before his. He should, for their sake as well as his, be given this honor.

It was the world's first great industrial war (our American Civil War was not quite as overwhelming in that respect, but it was getting there), a horror in which men were simply thrown into the meat grinder, dying in droves for little or no reason anyone could see. It kicked off the worst of the 20th century; the Great Depression stemmed in part from its aftermath, Hitler's rule in Germany and World War 2 began for reasons intimately connected with it, and, of course, there was the Great Influenza was almost certainly loosed on the world due to troop movements and the shipping of supplies around the world during that war. And in its wake came the fall of the Russian monarchy and the establishment of the Soviet Union, one of the most brutal and terrible reigns in history.

The Cold War and the Nuclear Age came about because of World War II, and the Korean War and Vietnam were part of the Cold War -- as were the Apollo missions, arguably humanity's greatest triumph and, it is to be hoped, the first steps on the long road to the stars
