I suspect they were hoping to either

(1) escape in the confusion, not grasping the level of competence implied by "US Navy," or

(2) die trying, rather than spend decades in prison.

There aren't that many smart pirates, so (1) is more likely, but you never know. What needs to be done is to make piracy so costly, in terms of lives of pirates lost as well as in any other way, that it loses any attraction it may have for people. I think we've got cause to send the Marines in to Somalia -- backed up by a lot of great big US Navy ships with great big guns and a real willingness to pound Somalia flat if it proves necessary to get the message across: Don't do piracy. Really.

I say we should send out a container ship that happens to be full of well-armed troops. Any pirate vessels that approach will get sent straight to Davy Jones' locker, no questions asked.

If we had a real President, that would probably be happening now.
