I read Robert Hare's Without Conscience: The Disturbing World of the Psychopaths Among Us a number of years ago by way of trying to understand the landlord that had murdered my best friend. In the process, I realized that that landlord wasn't the only one I'd ever known who fit the profile of the psychopath. My adoptive father, the weird student I'd once had, a really vicious boyfriend, foster parents -- they all did. Before, I hadn't had a concept or theory that fit them, but after reading that book I did, and it made tremendous sense. As this essay says, subclinical psychopaths are all around us that are responsible for a great deal of the world's misery, and the more we understand about them, the better we will be able to avoid them and deal with the damage they cause. May I point out that way too many politicians and mainstream media decision-makers fit the profile, too -- and that quite a few of them are in office right now? Thank you.
