The ugliest evils

Many like to fantasize about rape, that it is somehow, in a dark way, romantic, a way for romance to begin, and that when the target of one's lust says "No," it actually means "Yes." Well, here's the reality, in all its ugliness:

Walking the Path of Madness - If the girl had been Muslim, we'd have riots in the streets, not litigation.Uglier still ( Read more... )

The longer this goes on, the more Ann Coulter's not-entirely-serious proposal that we force the Muslims to convert to Christianity makes sense. Not that Christians are free of this evil, as you point out, but at least there's no question that it's EVIL.

Yep. We do have laws against this sort of thing, and we enforce them whenever possible. In Islamic countries, if those laws exist, they are honored far more in the breach than otherwise. The same is true of other evils, such as slavery in any form. Having been a victim of several such evils, I have real trouble remaining objective about them and what to do about them. So I certainly don't disagree with you.

I agree.

On the other hand, anyone who makes a FALSE accusation of the crime should be treated just as harshly.

Yes. Falsely accusing others of any violent, heinous crimes is itself a crime, as it may end up with a lynch-mob after an innocent individual or some other horror. It also ties up the courts for months or years, which in turn puts a burden on the taxpayers at whatever level the trials occur. It also has the same general effect that any instance of crying wolf does; enough false accusations, and a public expectation is created that the next such isn't worth paying attention to or doing anything about -- at which point it will become much easier for perpetrators of such crimes to get away with it scot-free. Yes, for all those reasons and more. I believe in justice, which isn't helped by such false accusations, and is in fact made less and less possible by them.
