Child Witchcraft Allegations on Rise in Africa, UN Reports

This is an extremely alarming trend. Africa is eating its own young for utterly stupid reasons, or no reasons at all. Worst of all, many children themselves will see in this excellent opportunities to get rid of playground rivals or other children they don't like -- accuse them of being witches and the mob takes care of the rest. You know the strangest thing about the Salem witch hysteria? Cotton Mather and his father, Increase Mather, now considered to be absolutely hidebound Puritans, actually helped bring the whole thing to a halt. They said that the available evidence just didn't support the accusations, and they were very disturbed by the willingness of people to accuse and punish and execute people on the basis of such flimsy evidence. As for Africa, something of the sort will finally call a halt to it -- judges will start prosecuting people for baselessly charging others with witchcraft, lawsuits will be brought against those making accusations who have thereby caused the injuries and deaths of innocent people, and so on. When it's hysteria time, people gladly indulge it. When the times change, somebody clamps down on it, and then it becomes unpopular. The thing that would really do it is for the UN or whoever is giving any of those countries aid to withdraw all aid until it stops -- and broadcast that on television, radio, Youtube, any way they ( ... )
