Did you know that the British were once one of the world leaders in rocketry technology? When Clarke wrote his great short science fiction in the late 1940's through mid 1950's, he (and his readers) took it for granted that Britain was going to be one of the major competitors in the coming Space Race. The British decided to cancel their space program before they ever succeeded in putting anything into orbit, because they decided they didn't need their own ballistic missiles; I look at this as part of the tragedy of British decline.

My reaction to the formation of the UKSA is -- nice, but pathetically late.
