This would go a good way toward explaining why jihadists are such poor negotiators. As the Palestinian experience shows, they are terrible at exploiting the pressure they have created to make real gains. The reason, obviously, is that the addicts want to keep fighting, rather than to actually win.

That sounds about right, actually. There's a syndrome there that is typical of junkies of all kinds. We should bring those who work with addicts all the time in the capacity of recovery specialists and psychologists into strategy sessions designed to figure out a way of de-fanging terrorists, at least partially, psychologically speaking. Figure out how to use their own psychology against them -- or trigger maturation that would get them to see that what they're doing is utterly self-defeating.
