I take it a pokemon's abilities can change as it evolves. Does this happen according to a pattern? Is there any way to tell what ability a pokemon will have after it evolves? Of course, if the evolved form has only one possible ability, it'll be that. But what about dual abilities?

Pokemon's abilities do change as they evolve-Eevee, for example, changes its ability. Some Pokemon don't change abilities. In the case of dual abilities, I think that, if it can, a Pokemon will keep the ability it has upon evolution if its evolved form is capable of having it.

Every species has two ability slots. If a Pokemon has the ability from the first slot, it will still do so when it evolves; there will just probably be a different ability in that slot for the evolution.

e.g.
Eevee has abilities A and B
Jolteon has abilities X and Y
An Eevee with A will always evolve into a Jolteon with X.
An Eevee with B will always evolve into a Jolteon with Y.

Unfortunately, many cases where abilities change across evolutions involve a baseform species with one ability evolving into a species with two, and then there's no way to know. But you can be sure that, for example, a Buneary with Klutz will keep it as Lopunny, but a Buneary with Run Away will have Cute Charm when it evolves.

Thanks, that really clears things up. :D And I take it that if both the base form and the evolution have the same possible abilities (such as the Shinx line with Intimidate/Rivalry), it will keep the same one?

That reminds me of when I transferred a Pidgeot from my FireRed to Diamond, and once she'd arrived I noticed that her ability had changed from Keen Eye to Tangled Feet. I didn't know that they gave the Pidgey line a new ability at the time so it freaked me right out. O
