A battling question for the masses.

Hey pokemon peeps. I don't post here much (more active on pkmncollectors) but I've been wondering something.
For anyone here who is a competitive battle (cactuarjoe comes to mind) how do you guys go about just kinda inherently knowing how to build a team, what moves work, etc ( Read more... )

If you posted your current team I'm sure some of the experts here wouldn't mind giving you advice on how to make it more balanced or help you achieve whatever you wanna do with it :P. I'm completely helpless though. I don't have wifi so I never bothered trying to build a crazy team.

Pieces of my team are posted. Once I find my book I can make it less shoddy looking D:

Smogon for hours on end = bad.

Smogon to reference movesets, look at articles that you think you need to read, posting of your teams for critical review at one of the many RMT forums and relying on people for help = good

Smogon as a dogmatic source for everything is bad because they only concentrate on Shoddy adn they have a very stilted view of what battling should be. If you're into that, then by all means, go there. I started a new LJ community dedicated to competitive battling called pimp_my_team. It's still fairly new and still working out some kinks, but if you post there, knowledgable and, most importantly, friendly people will help you build a team with the Pokémon YOU like, not with bored and tired standards that every other poser out there uses.

YOU! You're the one with the great guides for monoteams and revamps of the G/S/C days. You <3

I would love to join your community! I spent some time on smogon, but hated it. Everyone there is so stuck with using the SAME 10 pokemon, and then decided that one poke is too good, etc...
Tiers also drive me insane D: Basically, I miss the days when I could just pick some pokes, level them up and go, without having to worry about IVs, EVs, and tiers.

EVs are quite easy, actually. IVs are easy to understand but hard to manipulate.

Tiers are based on usage, not strength, except for the Uber tier (and I guess the BL tier). If you play on Wi-Fi... you won't have to worry about them being regulated, really. I don't care too much for worrying about tiers when constructing a team, but some people are really anal about it. It's good to know what they are though.

Yeah, I know about all that stuff, but after my month long war involving a 31 IV in Attack on my dragonite, I've gotten lazy D:

EVs = simple. IVs/Hidden Power are made to kill anyone without an AR.

I've just been interested in various wifi things on LJ and everyone is pretty anal about tiers, and I prefer not to care >_> otherwise I have to make 74827492 different pokemon to switch around based on who wants to play in X tier.

I've never been into the metagame, myself. It just seems like a lot of work, for something that's supposed to be a fun hobby. Some people get into it, to great success, I just EV train pokemon I like, and go for it.

It's only a lot of work if the people you play against are all srs bsnss. Wi-Fi is a wonderful thing, a wonderful, wonderful thing that allows players of all backgrounds to battle, not just the hardcores who want to have the IVs mapped out for them.

I completely agree. Shoot, I don't even EV train. Too much effort. I just pick my favorite ones, try to cover all my type bases, and go for it.

Yes, I am a lazy dude. I actually am planning a post that will prove this, but I digress.

Fun > Winning

...How the hell do you EV train, anyway? Blegh. I need to get my freakin' wireless WORKING before I can even think about this...

Trial and error.

I especially need trial and error because I play with 'gimmick' teams a lot that don't necessarily focus on power or anything recommended. Monotype teams and weather teams too (god I love Rain Dance.) I also generally play on the 'lower' tiers that most of Smogon disdain. Though they have more interesting Pokémon on them and more variety to choose from. Really you just need to scan all your resources for useful information. Smogon is an okay start, but I also use Psypokes (for their Pokédex, which is phenomenal), Pokegoons, which yes is a Something Awful site but has pretty much everything you need on movesets and locations and attack descriptions, and Pokenubs, which ditto to the last but for more general information as well as an EV training guide and other useful gems ( ... )
