Yeah... same concept-- you can use them to transmit information through air waves. Other receivers can pick it up from long distances away.

The Pokedex works like this, only on a smaller scale. It'll send information on Pokemon to the nearest computer then from there to the Lab in Pallet Town. Much quicker than mailing research letters across a region.

It's... very complicated, small electronic device. My Gramps developed the first one, but then I've seen a whole lot of newer ones since coming here...
