I'd like to thank g_the_curious for organizing a cool ride with some cool people. I had a great time out on the trail today. I think I got low blood sugar at one point and had to go easy for a while. I ended up getting dumb and going up a hill in too high of a gear and forced my way up it. My legs just completely gave out for several minutes until I ate a ( Read more... )

I have Shimano SPD's on my bikes and they totally rock. Clipless is certainly the way to go.

I've used SPDs on the road for years, and haven't had a problem with them on the road. Before that (back in the early 90s), I had some ancient 1-sided pedals with horridly oversized cleats. The few times I tried to do something crazy like off-roading in SPDs, they sucked heavily. Even after 1000+ miles of road use, off road, I came unclipped when I didn't want to (mid air) and often required more search time for lining the pedal up right to clip in. The eggbeaters have 4 sides on which to attach. I'm hoping this simpler design will make for easier use.

Glad you could make it, hope we didn't hold you back too much. :) Riding with others is pretty nice sometimes, much like working out with others can be. It also serves as a barometer of sorts--Patty is in pretty consistent shape, whereas Allan and I fluctuate a bit more than she does.

OCNP was a good trail, in some ways equal to Grapevine. We all agreed that we will visit it again in the near future.

Patty is in excellent shape. I was surprised at what she was doing on her old school rigid fork Cannondale, considering I have one very similar to it in age and style in my garage. The fact that she powered up a climb her first try that I have yet to accomplish in my 5-6 attempts says a lot to me. The first thing it says to me is that I need some form of foot bondage. Most people, from what I'm told, consider the toe clips that she uses "dangerous" off road. She seemed to ride just fine in them. I was similarly impressed with Allan, but my sexist tendencies make me appreciate an athletic woman moreso than an athletic man for some reason. You didn't do too badly yourself ( ... )
