the most beatiful story of love

Eduardo had, unlikely though he is to admit it now, been more than a little surprised when it came to his attention that his and Olive's six month anniversary was approaching. It isn't like he'd forgotten when it happened or anything; there's no way he could ever forget that, especially considering the circumstances under which it occurred, the ( Read more... )

The amount of time that's flown by since Olive first arrived on the island startles her at times. Eight months to the day since she showed up. Three months and a day since she turned eighteen. Six months since she started dating Eduardo. She should be getting ready for winter break, on tenterhooks to hear back on all those college applications she would have sent back by now; she should be studying for exams and hanging out with friends, if they're still friends.

She should be a lot of things. Right now, in spite of all that, she should be right here, she thinks, hands smoothing over the hips of her dress one last time before she heads for the door. Six months is a big deal in her book. It's not anywhere near as long as she wants with him, but she's never been in a relationship before, let alone hit the half year marker, and she knows lots of girls her age don't, however high their hopes, and life on the island is precarious ( ... )

While Eduardo doesn't think he would be able to ever take being with someone like Olive for granted anyway, there are moments when it really hits him just how fucking lucky he is. Her opening the door is one of them. Cliché as it is, he'd swear the sight of her takes his breath away, though he recovers quickly enough that he doesn't think it will be noticeable, smiling slowly as he lets himself take everything in - the dress, the shoes, how beautiful she is naturally. Six months with someone as perfect as her, and they're as good as ever. He can hardly understand it.

"I should hope so," he says wryly, leaning against her door frame. "I'd hate to think of you dressed up like that for somebody else." He steps towards her, then, pressing a quick kiss to her lips, forcing himself not to linger too long. "You look stunning."

"Maybe I just dressed up for me," Olive says lightly, reaching to rest a hand at his waist as she steps out, quickly closing the door to keep Duckie from following. "And you're one to talk, handsome. Happy not-technically-an-anniversary." She knows people use that word to mean even month-to-month markers of their relationships, but it's just plain wrong, lingually speaking. This is more like a demi-anniversary, but somehow that feels even more awkward to say than the other thing.

All she knows is, they've been together half a year, and she can't even say 'made it through half a year' because that would imply a struggle that's never existed. They're not above disagreements and the occasional brief spat, no, but it's been as easy, as natural, as drawing breath to be with him. She can't imagine that changing before they mark the real deal, but that's all the more reason, she thinks, to take note of the milestone. She smiles, moving her hand to take his.

"Half an anniversary," Eduardo says with a crooked smile, lacing his fingers through hers as he starts back towards the path. "And you're completely biased." His logic is flawed, of course, when she could easily say the same to him, and it would be true but not decision-informing, thus proving that so could the case be for her. It doesn't matter. He remains convinced even so, and will whatever she says. Besides, none of that is what's important now, and the beach is close enough that he can't really waste time, an introduction of some sorts necessary when they're mere yards away. "Anyway, I, um - I thought we might do something different tonight. Since, you know, special occasion and all."
