She should be a lot of things. Right now, in spite of all that, she should be right here, she thinks, hands smoothing over the hips of her dress one last time before she heads for the door. Six months is a big deal in her book. It's not anywhere near as long as she wants with him, but she's never been in a relationship before, let alone hit the half year marker, and she knows lots of girls her age don't, however high their hopes, and life on the island is precarious ( ... )

All she knows is, they've been together half a year, and she can't even say 'made it through half a year' because that would imply a struggle that's never existed. They're not above disagreements and the occasional brief spat, no, but it's been as easy, as natural, as drawing breath to be with him.
