Could you maybe just buy it and not activate it until the Verizon contract is over? Or is there a "new sprint customer" discount?

Good idea, but yeah, the cheapest way to get it is as a new Sprint customer. I'd spend way more purchasing the phone separately. Kudos to you for thinking outside the box, though! :)
