I just can't see this at all... in fact I cannot see anyone else playing Kirk.

I'm sort of okay with it, though like you I'd prefer they found a younger actor. Damon's proven that he does just fine as a lead in action flicks. I suppose that Damon could play Kirk in the strange Hollywood world where 30 year-olds play 18 year-olds all the time, but in real life he's about the same age as Shatner was portraying Kirk the first time around. And, let's face it, Shatner wasn't an astounding actor, though he did imbue the role with a quirky kind of bravado that the fans treasure. Damon might actually be able to pick up on that. I'm just thanking God they didn't cast Tom Cruise.
