James Doohan Dead at 85I am so sad to hear this, though I'm sure it's a mercy, given that he was suffering with Alzheimer's. I remember the last time he came to Dragon*Con, and he announced that it was indeed his final visit. He kind of made it clear he was saying goodbye, and while I never hung out much with the Trekkies, it was ( Read more... )

SCOTTY DIED?!

That is so truly sad :(
I had no idea he was so old. I am glad he has relief from the Alzheimers too.... but he will be missed. He was my favorite Star Trekker

I was never a huge Trekkie, but I always loved the character of Scotty. He was my personal favorite. While I've never got the honor of meeting the man in person, I also found him the least bothered by the stigma of Star Trek (unlike Nimoy's "I Am Not Spock" or Shatner's SNL "Get a life" sketch) and seemed to be a genuninely warm individual. Whether or not that impression is true, his death is a great lose for science fiction.

He just really struck me as a genuinely nice fellow. He thanked the fans for all the kindness they'd shown him, and good memories, and got choked up while he was doing it . . . heck, I got teary-eyed, and I've probably seen maybe 12 or 14 episodes of the original series, max, so I can imagine how broken up the Trek community must be. He just seemed so non-Hollywood and real. He seemed grateful for what life had given him: a permanent place in television history, his children, and the love of the fans.

he will definitely be missed. i heard him talk a few times at a sci fi con years ago - he was neat, although a bit cranky - although, after having to work with shatner, who can blame him! (i think shatner has mellowed with age and is good at making fun of himself - he was such an ego hog in star trek, though, okay, so shatner was always an ego hog...)

i loved scotty's accent - and, the "i know this ship like the back of my hand, oof..." he deserved much more credit than he received in later years.... bless him
