in all technical terms, childred do have more flexible bones that tend to heal a bit faster and break much less often. i think the majority of the difference is psychological though. when you're little you dont care and you just want to be patched up so you can go back into the yard and hit more crap with golfclubs, but when you're older you know exactly what that injury did to your body. a badly scraped knee becomes a nearly fracture patella or an almost torn ligament or dislocated knee or any of dozens of things you've read about/seen on ER. as for the actual physical difference in the severity of the injuries, scrapes/splits/bruises are bigger and worse because even the waifiest of adults weighs alot more than the average 9 year old, and when you crash down 100+ lbs onto a knee that really hasnt grown all that much skin since you were 50lbs, things look that much worse. as for the pus, you always seem to have pus coming out somewhere, and thats gross, and you're gross. just bleed like a normal person.
