It's pretty easy and you can find instruction on the innernet. Takes a bit of practice but that lore never said anything about the cranes being perfect. :P
And if you fold them right, you can make the wings flap.
This is now canon! Somewhere, just out of sight, is a flock of paper cranes, and they're migrating to the rest of the library.
There is a crane folded from fine Chinese paper, singed along the edges.
I tried this, a while back, but with Frogs. All sizes, varying shapes, but gave up after a hundred or so. Nothing I wanted that badly back then. :) Had a bunch the size of my thumbnail and they could jump. Tiddlycroakers!
Wonderful fic! I loved the quiet feel of it, and the details about how John makes and decorates the cranes to pertain to his past. Also, the bit about him having the urge to kind of stalk Leila, to make sure their girl is all right. I can so see John (and Finch) doing that!
The details of the cranes and how Reese quietly uses them to mark the passage of time and how his partnership with Finch has changed him are really nice.
