How about...1901 was, if we go with traditional canon, Watson's 50th birthday. Surely even a 'calculating machine' would calculate that to be noteworthy in some way?

Or, if that doesn't grab you, something with Holmes-Watson-Mycroft brotherly interaction, Mycroft making a point to include Watson in whatever the situation is (to Holmes's amusement).
