HOW THIS WORKS

Podfic is an audio recording of fanfic, like an audio book but written by fans about fannish stuff and read by fans. It's a great way to enjoy fic while you're out and about, or doing something that means you couldn't read fic usually (i.e. data entry). In many cases a podfic also brings something new to a fanfic, so that it can be enjoyed in a new way by readers and by the writers. I also like it as a way to participate in fandom without writing or drawing. Other people have spoken more and better about why podfic is awesome during day one of pod_aware: see this post for more details.

If you want to listen to some Doctor Who podfic, please visit the audiofic archive, dw_podfic or amplificathon. I've also recorded some fics, which can be found here.

There's a growing community of readers and listeners out there on LJ, but there aren't that many Doctor Who podfics. As someone who would like to listen to more Doctor Who podfics, I thought I'd do something about it, and founded this community, and this -thon.

All you have to do to play is record 1,000 words of (NEWLY RECORDED) Doctor Who podfic, and post it to this community on a day of your choice - starting the 25th of November and ending 24th December 2013. Please sign up by commenting on this post. The 1000+ can be all one story, or it could be 2x500ish stories, or 10x100 word drabbles etc. You get the idea.

Recording podfic is very easy ( here is a tutorial written by paraka as part of pod_aware). All you need is an author's consent (unless you're recording your own fic), a microphone, and some free software, such as garageband (Macs) or Audacity. You can then upload your podfic to one (or more) of the numerous sites that host audio files for streaming - I use www.tindeck.com

THINGS TO TAKE NOTE OF:
  • If you want to record more than 1,000 words, or you want to sign up for more than one day, DO IT!
  • Please don't be put off if you don't have a British accent, or you don't have the right British accent for the characters you're reading about. All readers are encouraged to take part. pod_aware featured a whole day of podcasts and podfics dedicated to the world of different accents. You can read/listen to more about that by going to their round-up of that day's work, which is here
  • Non-English language podfics are definitely allowed.
  • Please make sure you have an author's permission before beginning to podfic their work. Podficcers are very welcome to record their own fic. There's a list of authors who have given blanket permission on fanlore and some authors may have a note on their profiles indicating their general approval of podfic.
  • For the purposes of this -thon, crossovers (i.e. Doctor Who/Merlin) are not allowed. My reasoning being that many of the Doctor Who podfics that exist at this current time are crossovers, and it would be good to introduce a much wider range of Doctor Who podfic into the world. Crossovers with Torchwood, Sarah Jane Adventures, Bernice Summerfield, Gallifrey, etc are allowed, although I would encourage fics to have an element of Who in them, rather than being straightforward Torchwood fics, for example.
  • All characters and pairings (or lack there of) are welcome.
  • Classic, New, Big Finish, and novel canons are all welcome.
  • Crossposting is encouraged. As long as you post to the community you can post wherever as soon as you like. Spread the podfic joy.
