More shows in common, goodness! Did you start Game of Thrones this year too? I thought everyone had watched it before me. But you had read the books, though. I may never read them. I'm curious about Cersei's childhood but not that curious.

And I didn't like Breaking Bad from the pilot. I'm sure it must be good but just wasn't for me.

You might like DS9? Did you like Voyager or The Next Generation? If you did, you'll like DS9. It's my least favorite because I don't care for Sisko. But I watched it because it's Star Trek. :-)

Alias season one was very compelling. And season 2 but I stopped there.

I read the ASOIAF books last summer, but I don't think I started with the show until this year.

I actually haven't seen any of the Star Trek shows or older movies? I saw the first movie of the newer reboots a couple of years ago. So...I really don't know.

Yay, I'm really glad you're going to check out Six Feet Under, I'll be really curious to hear your thoughts! I watched it just last year and enjoyed it BUT it's sort of a depressing or...serious show given the subject matter and I watched it mostly around the holidays lol. But it's a show I come back to in my mind a lot.

and lol I'll be curious what you think of The Walking Dead, too. I love it, but I know it's not for everyone.

I keep meaning to check out Justified, too.

Lots of books! I can barely read nonfiction, so I'm impressed!

I watched the TWD pilot a while back and didn't latch in, but I've heard enough to want to give it another shot.

I've actually started preferring to read non-fiction, by a lot. I think it's because I can get just as good a fictional fix with good television, but it's really hard to go deep into a real-world topic with television or documentaries, at least not in a way that I can retain a satisfying amount.

DS9 is excellent, but not really representative of Trek except in the sense that a lot of its choices and story beats are a deliberate counterpoint to some of the franchise's core assumptions. Which means you might not get as much out of it as people with a grounding the original series or TNG did, but on the other hand it is definitely worth watching in its own right.

I love your thinky thoughts but we really don't enjoy the same things. That's interesting to me! That being said, I do think that Sons of Anarchy is going to be best viewed as a condensed and intense seven-year story than live. Next year will be the year to see if its for you! We also love Justified but there's just not enough meat on the bone to consider it much more than a long mini-series.

I may not wait that long to give at least some of SoA a try, since most of it's available on streaming by now. I feel like I can only really invest in one ~serious drama at a time.

What a good list for 2014. Am surprised about Breaking Bad as least impressed, but I am planning to watch that next year so I shall see for myself no doubt.

I mean, it's not that it's a bad show? It's that I spent all these years hearing people drool over how it was ~~the best show ever, a ~~reinvention of the form, ~~flawless, ~~morally challenging, and....it is none of those things. It's a very, very well-executed (if also full of blatantly racist and classist just-so moralizing) slice of the sin-porn grimdark antihero genre.

I feel like if you go in there prepared for "derivative but in a technically A+ way" you'll probably enjoy it a lot more than I ended up doing, tbh. (Also don't watch The Wire first, since it IS all of the things BB was sold to me as, and therefore that last season was even more of a disappointment by comparison.)

I'll keep that in mind, since I have both of these on hand. BB -> The Wire it is. When I get around to them.
