SPN month, angel week day (4)

Jun 15, 2012 00:12

Generally, one doesn't wish to be cavalier with harsh language like "foul stank of pigeon crap."

And yet, sometimes circumstances and intellectual honesty compel exceptional measures.

Such is the case with Swan Song.

this is a POLEMIC. brought to you by: ME BEING IRRITATED. you've been warned. massive spoilers through the end of S5, not particularly important mention of 7x20 )

supernatural, wtf, avian theory of media criticism, spn: corpus angelorum, rant

I agree with your avian articulation of these hypotheses. Alas, all I can offer in agreement is bunnies.

Bunnies are a viable alternative hypothesis!

I really think I'm onto something with this bird-thing. If something is so FUCKING STUPID as to need to be compared to the BSG finale: it is a PIGEON and deserves my ridicule. Any narrative idea in the broad middle of the spectrum is probably worth a fair-minded analysis of its strengths and weaknesses. If something is so CRACKTASTICALLY AWESOME that I will defend it to the ends of the earth: BALDAVINO THE CROW.

It's the show having deliberately traded off pure excellence for the sake of an act of self-indulgence

Unfortunately, I think this is exactly what happened. They sacrificed plot and sense because, why not, they just decided to. Basically, they thought some confusing end shot of Chuck disappearing was cool.

Oh, but here's anohter theory for you since the Metatron thing is out--Chuck was a prophet that was raptured to Heaven. Also, Chuck was Jesus. Or the second coming of Jesus. Or was living an ordinary life until his work was done and he remembered.

UUUUUUGH. I mean, I'm pro-because it's cool generally, but UGH. Even then, a framework with him doing an opening narration and then winking out at the end of the episode would've worked. I probably wouldn't have found it particularly compelling, but it wouldn't have stomped all over the rest of the episode.

Ooooh, I like the raptured thing! I don't think 7x20 quite forces me to say die on the Metatron theory, but that one works just as well. I'm collecting alternative theories that don't make me so crazy, lol. (1) raptured, (2) angel, (3) bunnies.

Pfft, Chuck is so NOT God. It makes no sense at all that way, but if some people want to be wrong believe it, what's it to me? It seems designed to be one of those "believe what you want" ideas. I thought it was just a way to end Chuck's story in a way that would cause the biggest reaction. I mean, Kripke really loved to poke.

This is obviously the mature and reasonable perspective! I appreciate a good fandom-trolling more than most, but not at the expense of the story. I just can't separate my WTF reaction to that from my irritation over the Flaw That Would Not Shut Up of the episode that came so close to being SO PERFECT.

L O L

I mean, I do love Swan Song, but whatever with the Chuck parts.

(17) RIGHT? I DON'T GET IT AT ALL. AND THEN I THOUGHT I WAS STUPID? (and then I decided that really everybody else was stupid, natch.)

and so I am obviously reluctant to DEIFY it.

Crying.

Bless your bird gifs. Crows rule, pigeons drool. Let it be known.

hahahaha, this. It's not arrogance when you really do know better! (lawl, a thing I do love very much about this episode: SAMIFER IS KIND OF A BRO??!? There is so much wrong with me.)

Crows rule, pigeons drool. Let it be known.

MAY THE TRUTH RING FORTH THROUGHOUT THE LAND.

I mainlined Seasons 1-8 while ill, so I never got to comment on Swan Song. BUT YOU ARE SO RIGHT! Freakin Chuck!

Swan Song had some awesome moments. See 'Assbutt!' and 'Did you just molotov my brother with holy oil?' The Casplosion! Be still my twisted heart!

But the Chuck bits were nauseatingly saccharine, boring and, worst of all, threw me right out of the story. I assumed it made me slightly ill because I'm a cynical Brit with an even darker sense of humour than most. So it's good to know I'm not alone

Girl, I think I love you.

This has been a rant (too)
