I've been falling more and more behind, and plus, know nothing about SPN. (Should I add Supernatural to my "to-watch list"?) :)
However, I just thought I'd say "HIIIIIIIII! FRIEND!", and that you are not the first BSG fan I've heard state that life lesson - though usually in a much more bitter/resigned sort of way/form. LOL
HEY GIRL! Um, okay. Overall, I would say you'd probably enjoy SPN, but I wouldn't make it a high priority on the to-watch list the way I would Buffy or TVD. But, so you can decide:
PROS: The characterization of the 2.5 main characters is phenomenal, and it's one of the most intense, thoughtful portrayals of a sibling relationship on television. (I like the Salvatores better! But not by much.) There's tons of big juicy mythological stuff, both in terms of show-myth-world and real-world mythology. Will make you feel all the feelings in every episode. It's also extremely clever.
CONS: Gross gender and race shit going on (worse than BSG, WHAT); the writing is sometimes jarring in the discrepancy between set-up and follow-through (not as bad as BSG). Frequently lacking in ladies. Could probably collapse bridges with the weight of its MAN PAIN.
If you do decide to go with it, the first couple of seasons are less plot and more stand-alone episodes and can be a little tough to get into the swing of things. I'd recommend checking out snickfic's

LOL XD XD XD I seriously love that gif. (Probably because I loved that movie sooo much.)
Ah - I think if I ever get Netflix, BtVS remains at the top of the list along with The West Wing... too many recs from too many different friends to ignore. :) (TVD and Once Upon a Time are also up there...) Currently though, I AM watching Sherlock. Three eps/season and two seasons out - I figured I'd be able to handle it. Sherlock-phile that I am.
... I'll admit, I wince at the mention of loads of MAN PAIN (I suspect this is the reason why I never made it through more than one ep of Falling Skies - either that, or I've just lost the capability to watch tv in any sort of "proper" way with the disappearance of my attention span and the appearance of school/thesis... *shrugs*) but... Hmm, I am highly intrigued by sibling relationships and mythology. :3 I'll add it to list anyway - just not bolded
