This is me BEING THE CHANGE instead of whining that LJ is dead today.

I watched the first seven episodes of Farscape over the holiday and kept thinking I would react when I finished the first season. And now three weeks later I have....watched the first seven episodes of Farscape and I'm a little stuck with it.

Hey! I'm watching Alcatraz! The pilot wasn't as good as Lost's (WHICH OMG YOU HAVE TO WATCH AT SOME POINT BECAUSE KATE AND JULIET ARE KICKASS PARTS OF A LOVE SQUARE), but it looked promising in how it can have individual procedural episodes with an overarching mystery. Dr. Adorkable Criminologist is Hurley from Lost, AKA Clem as a main character. I like Becky, too, and the guy from Jurassic Park is menacing enough to keep me watching. What I don't like is that it's going to be telling men's stories because all the prisoners and guards who disappeared are men, and it doesn't look too promising from a Bechdel perspective, but I'll watch anytging JJ Abrams puts in front of my eyeballs, so I'm satisfied.

Lost's pilot didn't do it for me though! It actually put me to sleep (which usually involves a triple-dose of sedatives and two different anxiolytics, so). It felt so much like OMG! LOOK! A CATASTROPHE! which, being familiar with the premise of the show, was not particularly surprising. Is it a skip around at the beginning kind of show?

What I don't like is that it's going to be telling men's stories because all the prisoners and guards who disappeared are men, and it doesn't look too promising from a Bechdel perspective

Yeah, that's disappointing, but the rest of it is thoughtful enough that I have some hope that'll improve with time. (These thoughts were kind of what tipped me into giving it a try, so maybe I'm disposed to giving it a little more credit than I would? I'm hoping it'll be good though.)

that the visuals keep me from writing fic at the same time

LOL, exactly. I need dialogue-heavy shows because I have a difficult time watching and listening until I get invested, if at all.

I am hoping someone will come in and tell us how to click into it, though, because I do think it has some promise to be fun. edit: eowyn-315 TO THE RESCUE!

I've watched the first two episodes of Alcatraz - and I'm cautiously interested. I like everyone in that bar at the moment, which is always good, and I'm really intrigued by Lucy's whole situation because that closing scene of episode 2 was a big WTF-moment for me.

I have this inexplicable childhood crush on Sam Neill (I think at one point I desperately wanted him to be my father - after Jurassic Park or something, and then when I grew up I was a bit attracted to him so ALL bad, lol).

We shall see.

I'm hesitant on trying Person of Interest. As Jesus Caviezel is forever distracting. But I'm also curious. Will you continue watching?

oooh, yes, Lucy is intriguing. I do think the show looks like it will have a good mix of mystery-twists and character-twists, which is always excellent.

I'm hoping I hear something that'll turn me around on PoI, but right now I'm not really planning on keeping up with it, tbh.

*butts in*
I wrote a post about nine reasons to watch P of I. Plus there's the slowest strip-tease ever reason. But I have a high tolerance for procedurals, so my YAY PofI! reaction isn't necessarily going to work for everyone else.

See, I like procedurals too, did I just pick the worst episode to start with? Ghosts, I think it was, whatever was the first one on cbs.com. If someone was trying to troll me they couldn't have done better. But, idk, I liked Carter? so I'm totally persuadable.

Farscape takes some time. Season 1 was rough. At that point none of them know each other, they don't really trust each other, and they're sort of forced to deal. Also, John's dropped into a completely alien landscape and it takes some time for him to ground to it. As time goes on, you start to get back story on several of the characters and deep, complex friendships and love relationships develop. I think the swing point for me was Rhapsody in Blue (needless to say a Zhann centric ep).

As for Aeryn/John, I'm someone who never ships canon pairings and I ship Aeryn/John like red hot fire, but you know, their relationship develops slowly and they snipe at each other and battle and snark and just end up loving each other so damned much.

This is the fanvid I send potential fans who aren't quite sold: http://youtu.be/9234SXFRSRg. It's slightly spoilery as it shows some future characters and relationships and hints at some of the arcs, but not too horribly bad.

Zhaan is fantastic! Will I miss anything if I just skip to that episode?

I will reserve judgment on Aeryn/John! I seem to be a harder sell on canon pairings too. Like I don't want the damn SHOW anywhere near my SHIPS and then I can feel all smug and aggrieved about the ~brilliant storyline I was ~wrongfully denied.

There are some significant developments in the episodes between PK Tech Girl and Rhapsody in Blue (including a another Zhann heavy episode that's kind of hot). I'd watch the other episodes.

I bought the whole run of Farscape a while ago, and have only made it partway through season two. I expected I would love it and instead it's... enjoyable. But I haven't fallen in character love with anyone and that's sort of what I need, I think, to push me onward. *shrug* Maybe if I have a ton of free time over the summer. There's a ton of fic out there by good writers, so I sort of wish I liked it more.

Oh look, I have a Farscape userpic. See, I really wanted to like it! (Hah, that's probably getting deleted in the next round of "I need userpics for [insert new fannish love here].")

Love Person of Interest (and have acquired three userpics by deleting Lost userpics), but it's okay if you don't love it as well. ;0) It's hitting my preference for procedurals without boring me or grossing me out, like so many procedurals do. The opening monologue is UTTERLY RIDICULOUS, although I guess it gets the job done for any new viewers each week. (Did you ever watch The Pretender? It had a completely silly 'tell everything' opening ( ... )

Yeah, I definitely want to give it a try because Zhaan, John, and Aeryn are all character types that pull me in easily, but without that I probably wouldn't bother either. I WANT TO LIKE IT TOO THOUGH.

I like your PoI thoughts, though, I'll probably give it another try at some point.

I may repost this in my LJ, but for now it's just for you. (Heh.) Episode list with my 'how essential is it' grade. I think I'll do a scale of 1 to 5. Five means watch this b/c you need it or b/c it's the best. This isn't meant as a grade for quality, just as a tool for you as a newbie ( ... )
