When you set a goal to write a little everyday, how you generally do that? Like, do you wake up early or write before bed or set aside time in the middle of the day? I've tried setting similar goals in the past but I have a hard time turning it into a habit, so I'm curious what works for other people.
Congrats on all the writing you did in 2014! Happy New Year!
I try to get up early in the morning, between 5:30 and 6 and write before work. In the winter, I usually put on the sunlamp while I work and have my breakfast and coffee and then leave for work between 6:30 and 7:10. I like doing it first thing for a couple reasons: a) my brain is awake but still tired, so it's easier to push through tricky bits by writing placeholder language I intend to edit later; b) my house is dead quiet so it's easy to concentrate; and c) if I get it done first thing, then I can do whatever I want in the evenings after work (the only time I have free time) and not feel guilty if I'm too exhausted/depressed from my work day to try and write.
It's def one of those things that's different for everyone based on schedules and stuff, but I really feel good about myself/writing when I actually manage to do it XD
Those are some very good reasons to do it in the morning. I'm a night owl and I generally shy away from waking up any earlier than I have to, but this might be worth trying. Hmm... I could even borrow a sunlamp from my parents. ;-)
I want to thank you again for running secret_mutant. I've had such a good time both times I participated, and I've even struck up a friendship with my recipient this year. I appreciate all the hard work you put into organizing secret_mutant; XMFC fandom is lucky to have you.
Yeah, I used to SUPER be a night owl and have the exact opposite schedule to what I have now--I would do my best work late at night and my body would want to sleep until the afternoon. Sometime in the past couple of years, something shifted in my internal rhythms and suddenly it was easier to get up in the mornings and I can't sleep past like, ten at the VERY latest, even if I want to. Bodies are weird!
And, aw, thank you ♥ I'm glad you've enjoyed the exchange! 100% honestly, the thing that keeps me doing it is how much people seem to enjoy it/look forward to it--it more than makes up for the tiny problems along the way ♥
