Hello, internet. This is not the post I warned you all about on Twitter--I locked that private to me because it was mostly just a lot of whining. This is something else, I guess
( Read more... )
I want to read the story where Charles learns the true meaning of Yom Kippur so badly, OH MY GOD. Precious, privileged little shit Charles, who has never been hungry a day in his life, fasting for 25 hours and NOT GETTING THE POINT for pretty much the entire time, SIGN ME UP.
I'm so confused about people writing ANY story where ANY character learns the true meaning of ANY holiday? But then, I am a cynical asshole who hates lessons. . .
But seriously, your concerns are good concerns and I can see how frustrating it must be. Sorry :(
Hahaha, hilariously, it's not even one story, I can think of at least two or three off of the top of my head where Erik is Grumpy At the Holidays, but Charles teaches him to embrace happiness with his ~*love of Christmastime*~.
hahahah god, this is why I mostly just participate on the outskirts of fandom, because fucking what even. those people are dumb. you're not dumb. the end.
someone please write a story where Charles learns the true meaning of Yom Kippur or something, okay? girl you know how far I'll take a joke right?
Oh my god, I can't even explain to your the rage aneurysm I almost had at the story where Erik was a Catholic priest. Like, "FLAMES. FLAMES ON THE SIDE OF MY FACE." levels.
I think you still owe me a story from last SM where Erik discovers the true meaning of Kwanzaa, much to everyone's confusion. JUST SAYING. (This is an acceptable substitute, though. OR MAYBE THEY HAPPEN CONCURRENTLY. In like, November. So everyone's really confused.)
OH MAN I was about to indignantly say I TOTALLY WROTE THAT but then I remembered that I wrote like 2 sentences and then thought about writing more. But I thought about it a lot! Fuck, I guess the Secret doesn't always work!
There's an extra dimension of trickiness with this subject because there are so many different ways to be Jewish, you know? And that's kind of a touchy topic within the Jewish community as a whole. Like I've been told by a fellow Jew that I'm not "really" Jewish because I didn't grow up attending shul and am therefore not part of the community. So what Erik's particular Jewish culture would have been in XMFC canon -- or in any AU scenario -- is kind of a nebulous thing to define, and will likely be very different for different writers/readers. I definitely think it's an interesting topic for meta, but yeah, Tumblr is generally a super shitty platform for reasoned discussion, and I kinda hate that that's the main focus of fandom these days. ( stupid kids get off my fucking lawn, etc.)
But no matter what, Erik discovering the true meaning of Christmas is stupid and offensive. :P
Yeah, that's also definitely true. Which is actually kind of cool! I would love to read tons of different stories about Erik being Jewish in different ways and why he keeps which parts of the culture and religion and all of that.
But really, even more than stories about Erik being Jewish, I really, really just want an end to stories where Erik is overtly Christian >:( (Or at least put in situations that erase his Judaism.)
