Hi, internet! Happy belated Christmas! And early New Year's!

I'm so sorry for the radio silence--I've been swamped with secret_mutant stuff and it finally finished while I was home in Jersey for Christmas at which point I had, you know, family stuff to do. But I've officially put the lid on secret_mutant for the year, so...yes. I'm mostly back, although I'm leaving to see liveonthesun

See I find it funny that so many people would put only holiday prompts in a challenge that caters to everyone. I think I knew of a few people who had NO holiday prompts and that works best, if you ask me. But :/ to all the Erik and Christmas stuff.

I think that's why I did that Hanukkah story myself. Or something.

I mean, as it's a holiday-themed exchange, I can kind of see why someone might think that? Which is why there's a note in the FAQ that specifically says that you DON'T have to do holiday prompts. But it does make assigning stories problematic.

I swear I don't remember the Erik + Christmas thing being such a problem last year, but I was also SWAMPED around Christmas time last year because I was in the thick of running the fest, so it's possible I just missed them. I mean, I remember the wank around that fic that was Erik in a Christmas Carol AND had Charles miraculously able to walk again, but that was just one thing. idk, idk.

While Hanukkah is great, I'm not even asking for that, just NOT CHRISTMAS. I wouldn't think it would be that hard. :\

But I see your point. It doesn't have to be Erik celebrating Hanukkah, just not Christmas. Though as a very relaxed Jew, I don't don't mind seeing Jews being in Christmas stories. Or maybe it's just because I know my poor Mom has to sit through a Christmas dinner with family because it's what you do when you're in a family with Christians. It's one of those things that you just sort of do to get through the season, even if it doesn't mean anything to you.

It's not that I mind seeing him in Christmas stories so much as it bothers me that there's no acknowledgement that it's not his thing. I've read a bunch of stories where it was like, "Well, this was a Christmas thing he was doing with Charles and he was Jewish but he was doing it because he loved Charles," which is fine. I want there to at least be some sort of explanation as to why it's happening, maybe a note of frustration or dismissal that it's a thing he has to do. But so many of them are just like, "Erik and Charles celebrate Christmas together!" that it drives me batty, as if his (cultural, if not necessarily religious or practicing) Judaism isn't a huge, huge part of his character arc in XMFC. And seeing him starring in what are very clearly Christmas narratives and learning a lesson at the end is infuriating. And pretty offensive. Like, I know it's not entirely commutable, but it basically makes me feel the same way as when straight girls on tumblr try to teach me about the "right" way to be gay
