for fic writers, mostly

So, I've been on the internet since the ice age (or 1995-ish) and writing fic for pretty much that entire length of time. I guess I always assumed, the way that people are generally self-centered and assume everyone thinks/acts the way they do, that people produced and posted fic in the same way that I produced and posted fic.

Then I ran secret_mutant and that ( Read more... )

My "other" is sort of an "more than one of these."

I don't like to start new Google docs until I know that I've got something that's going somewhere because otherwise, I end up having to clear out a dozen untitled blank or almost-blank docs every few months.

So basically I start in Word, eventually transfer things over to Gdocs if a) it looks like it's going some where and b) I think there's going to be time to work on it from a computer other than my own laptop.

As for coding, I mostly handcode as I write, but sometimes I like to punish myself and use the wordprocessor commands while I"m drafting and then have to go through and replace with hand coding when I'm posting.

I kind of go through phases, since sometimes I'll write almost everything out longhand first (I find it easier to edit that way, and I can color code), then type it up into GDocs, and other times I'll just write in GDocs (which is what I've been doing lately. Though when I'm also writing on paper, I still write out the HTML code.

I have no idea why I don't code as I go. Because it drives me INSANE doing it at the end. >_> I think it's just a stupid habit. I also tried writing in Semagic for a while, but somehow ended up migrating back to Word anyway...

(This is a very interesting post, btw. :D)

I write in Scrivener, which is the awesomest writing program ever. If I think I'll have time to write at work, I'll copy it into Gdocs, or Evernote, but it always gets copied into Scrivener in the end. Before I had Scrivener I used Word.

Scrivener has an export to html function, but I always go in in a html editor program and delete some of the invisible characters and get the proper html for any accents, etc. Part of the reason I do that is because I archive my fics in several different places, and some of them take different html, so this way I can quickly copy and paste. Plus, I used to have my own website, and posted things there, too.

Though I am moving more towards using Scrivener instead of MS Word, and even though I hand code as I go, I also use the formatting in the word processor.
