This question IS kind of set up to make writers defend their choices isn't it?

It's true. The way it's phrased is kind of implying "Yes, I prefer male/female characters because they are male/female," whereas I think almost any answer from an intelligent writer is going to be more along the lines of, "I prefer writing characters who have xxx quality, regardless of gender," but at the same time, it's hard not to look over your writing, at that point, and panic that you're not being fair to whatever gender you write less.

At least, for those of us who aren't douchebags. I'm sure there are stereotypical slash fangirls out there who have no problem answering with, "Dudes, OBVIOUSLY, they don't have icky girl parts!"

Yeah, there's a thin line between 'having a thoughtful conversation about gender and fiction' and 'imposing categories that may or may not be relevant.'

IDK. I do think the question puts people on defensive, although who people who are compelled to answer with all the reasons that girls objectively suck and no one can be expected to write about them are not my favorite people.

It does suck. It would be much better if it was along the lines of, "Do you find yourself writing more male or female characters?" which sounds much less judgmental.

YAY FOR WRITING AND ALSO SOCIALIZING.

So...how long are these writing chat thingies normally? Because iceshade is coming over, and writing is totally socially acceptable hanging out activities.

...also, I could probably figure out how to make an AIM account. Probably. >.>

Writing chats are normally about two or three hours? But they're really mellow. People come and go and there's no obligation to play any of the rounds or stay to the end or whatever. And I totally think writing is a socially acceptable hang-out activity. When I lived in Jersey, on more than one occasion harmonyangel or quatredeathlady would come over specifically for the writing chat XD
