have you tried a nail file? It would be a tedious process... but it might not be as bad as a nail cutter.

I've had this happen before - what I've done is take the end of a fabric band-aid, trim it to fit, and stick it on. I think I had to put on a new band-aid a couple times as it got wet or icky-ish, but it held the nail together enough that I could trim the nail (with the band-aid stuck on and holding it together) and keep me from constantly fretting that it would tear/snap off and cause me more pain.

Dude. I always just rip it or cut it off. But clearly my pain threshold is high compared to my patience for broken nails.
