And he doesn’t know how that worked out, either. He never gave anyone permission to call him by a nickname. They just decided on their own that “Cat” was cuter.
Rakan still calls him by his name, but when he reminds himself of that, he always shakes his head firmly, thinking, No, no, that doesn’t count anymore. (Though he immediately feels guilty for thinking it. Rakan cares about Catalin. He just cares about his country more.)
Rakan told Catalin once that his name means “happier than anyone,” and while he’s not sure Rakan was telling the truth, it sounds like something his mother would do. He thinks so, anyway. It’s hard to tell; he sees his mother three times a year, and she always tearfully addresses his feet.
But Rakan might have made it up. It sounds like something he would do. Just to justify all the times he tells Catalin to smile.
