Gorgeous. Maybe I'm biased but this is just a goregous paragraph. I love the idea of Sam on a California beach, pensive but not brooding. Meditative. Every word here resonates. I almost quoted back your whole snippet to you! The idea of Sam thinking himself too old is just fascinating, because for all his youthful and energetic energy, it must've been a jolt to see the passion and fire in Will and his people.

Exactly, because it's not so much that he is old, just that... he's become almost complacent. I mean, even earlier in the season we see it. He doesn't want to put energy into those races because he knows they're already lost, because that's the way the party works. He's learned to go through the routine without trying to shake it up, and seeing people shake it up and actually get something done inspires a whole new force within him.
Or so I like to think. XD
You know, I can't imagine Sam getting his seat according to less than honest ( ... )
