The final chapter (well, besides the epilogue). I hope people who read this enjoy it. It's the longest fic I've ever written and it was hard to try and do the emotions and characters justice! But thank you for those who have read and commented. There's actually a whole chapter I couldn't get to work involving Chinen...^^;;
Sunrise was just a short while away when Yuya's boss confirmed their new destination. “According to Okamoto, Suzuki-san was, in fact, fired. No reason listed. His boss's name is Sawamura Keisuke. He's a single parent with a 16 year old daughter named Aiko and 19 year old son named Masaki.” She had already handed out a quick hand out on the family. “As of this moment, we are looking for all three, but evidence points towards this Masaki as the shooter...Well, since Inoo found his school ID at the crime scene, it's pretty obvious.” She turned to survey them all. “We have a search warrant and I want those hiking boots found.” Her eyes blazed and then she pivoted, heading out.
They filed after her, swift despite the hour. Fleeting into the night, they all soon found their way to an ordinary looking house. Yuya was tense, shadowing his boss as she approached the front door. She'd already signaled several others to surround the house and now she straighted, authoritative. Knocking firmly on the door, she waited, taping her heel on the front rug, as if she wasn't trying to track down a killer. Yuya admired this woman so much, especially her ability to keep calm.
The door soon opened and a middle aged man stood before them, bleary eyed and wrapped in a bathrobe. “What's going on?” He demanded, irritated from an interrupted sleep.
Badge in hand, Yuya's boss simply walked past Sawamura Keisuke, into the house. “We have a warrant to search your house and I would appreciate it if you would answer a few of my questions.” As if on cue, several team members poured in, splitting up to search the house, giving no heed to the owner's protests.
“D-daddy?” A sleep young voice called out. From on doorway, a girl was peeking out, wide-eyed at the invasion. She was just a high schooler, though...from the bulge in her stomach, she was a very pregnant one. This must be...Aiko.
Yuya froze slightly, still in the shadows. Aiko was pregnant? Ryouhei's words came back to him. “I never touched her! She's j-just a kid...”
….There was no way that could possibly be Ryouhei's child. He would never have touched her!
His thoughts all muddled, his self not really being all that helpful, Yuya watched as his boss descended on the two civilians, firing off questions. Not surprisingly, they answered her without trouble, bewildered, and in the father's case, very irate.
“Would someone tell me what the hell is going on?” He demanded again, which was when Yuya's boss chose to reveal some information.
“Two hours ago, Suzuki Ryouhei died from a gunshot wound.” She informed them sharply.
Aiko's eyes widened with visible shock. “No!” She gasped.
The father's reaction was considerably different. “You mean that bastard who raped my daughter?” He nearly spat.
“Raped?” The boss tilted her head, looking from the father to Aiko. “Miss, did Suzuki-san rape you?”
The girl fell silent, hunching and looking down at her hands, her hair obscuring her face.
“Is that his child you're carrying?” The boss pressed just a little more. Yuya wanted to scream to them all that Ryouhei would never touch Aiko, much less rape her. That was just too horrible to even think of associating his beloved Ryouhei with. But he kept his tongue. This wasn't his show...In fact, he should be searching for those boots...
“That bastard rape my little girl.” The man growled. “He deserved to die.”
Yuya was surprised at his own control, not leaping at the man. Maybe it was just all the shock, but he just continued to watch.
“Miss, did Suzuki Ryouhei rape you?” His boss had a harsher edge to her voice. Aiko continued to look down and squirm uncomfortably.
“Hey, leave my dau--”
“Sir, I am sorry, but a very decent young man was murdered and I am here to find his killer.” She snapped back, cutting him off. “Where is your son?”
Before the man could answer, Morimoto appeared. “Boss, we found them.” In his hands, he held a pair of tan hiking boots.
The boss became stiff. Icy. “Where. Is. Your. Son?” She stressed every word out, staring the man down, who took a step back, stammering.
And then there was shouting from the side of the house, moving to the front walk. They all rushed to the door to find Kamei and Asaka tackling a fleeing young man to the ground, the ensuing struggle quickly ceasing as the boy Yuya assumed to be Masaki was subdued, cuffed, and recited his rights.
“Masaki? Masaki!” Aiko shrieked. “What's happening? What's happening to Masaki?”
“He is under the arrest for the murder of Suzuki Ryouhei.” The boss coldly replied.
“Wh-what? Why!?” The girl was sobbing. “W-why would M-masaki want to hurt Suzuki-senpai!”
“Because that dirt bag raped you!” Her father roared. “And he is family...I did not do enough, so he took care of the job. That man didn't deserve to live after doing that to you.”
“He didn't do ANYTHING!” The teen practically screamed it amidst her sobs. “Atsuya's the father...” She gasped out, whimpering and clutching a herself, looking so tiny and frail now.
“Your boyfriend?” Sawamura choked out as all looked to the girl. “You....you lied to me...”
“I had to!” She cried. “Y-you were calling m-me a wh-whore....What would have ha-happened if I told you the t-truth!”
Yuya's heart tore and he wanted to run to her, to shake her and scream that Ryouhei would still be alive if she had told the truth. But he didn't have to say anything. His boss was the one in control.
“Well, Miss, I bet you'll wish you had told the truth. Because now there is a nice young man in the morgue and your brother is going to jail for his murder.”
***
It was done. Finished. Case closed. Sawamura Masaki's fingerprints were found on a gun, later recovered from his room, the gun that had been used to gun down Ryouhei.
Yuya sat in the hallway of the police building, silently unwinding from the most nightmarish day of his life. It was probably mid-morning or something like that, but it felt like a week since he'd gotten the call. A call that had changed his life.
He struggled to hold back the tears that were threatening to overwhelm him. He'd been strong for so long but now it was really hitting him that Ryouhei was never coming back. He felt so lost and torn up and broken right at that moment that it was a struggle to even breath.
“Goodbye, love...”
But slowly he began to unravel, tears streaking down his cheeks as he silently sobbed, his shoulders completely still and his hair hiding the evidence of emotions from the world. “Ryouhei...” The whispered slipped out, almost silently.
The pain burned deep into him, making his body feel like it wanted to rip itself apart, just to make it stop. The tears came and came and he couldn't make them stop. Memories, wishes, pain.
Just when he thought he was going to lose it, cool fingers were wiping at his cheeks. Yuya jerked back, flailing slightly as his eyes flew to the figure of the gorgeous man kneeling in front of him, eyes wide with loving concern.
It was Kouta. His Kouta. His sweet, loving, perfect Kouta.
“.....Kou.....” He whispered, half wondering if he was imagining things.
“Yuyan...” Kouta slide into the seat next to him, gently pushing the hair away from Yuya's face, brushing the tears away still. “Baby, I'm here...it'll be okay...”
Yuya looked at Kouta in awe for a few moments, just sort of crying and staring at the same time. And then Kouta pulled him into a hug. The warm embrace was too much. Yuya broke apart, though now he wasn't afraid to do so. Kouta was holding him...things weren't okay, but they would be. He clung desperately to his lover, not saying a word, just sobbing his heart out, letting go of all the hurt inside. And there was Kouta, being as perfect as always, holding Yuya even though Yuya had run away from him. Kouta stroked his hair, gently comforting him, keeping him warm, keeping Yuya's heart in one piece.
“Kou...”
“Yuyan~”
I love you.
And Yuya realized that he didn't want to go back. He wanted to go forward, with Kouta at his side. The future was his, not broken memories of the past. He would never truly let them go, but that didn't mean that he had to close his eyes to the next sunrise. Another day was beginning.
