I have this running thing, based on Chuck's characterization in First Class, that Charles is just shit at reading people. Like, he can read their minds and see what they're thinking and what's stored in their brain and all that, but if he's not actively in their mind gauging their reactions, he has no idea what they're feeling. Which makes the whole thing with Erik awkward, because he likes and respects Erik, so he doesn't want to constantly be invading his privacy, but he also has no idea how to act or interpret what Erik's doing or saying and it's just super awkward all the time.
