Basically everyone I know is sick and pitiful and exhausted right now. It's that time of the year--fall is coming, but first summer has to get a last few rainy, humid punches in. Rory's used to working all hours - night shifts for weeks on end or earlies that have him up and eating a lonely breakfast at 5 in the morning. Which is fine, it's part of the job, but an unexpected benefit of getting married as been the gift of Sunday mornings. The manager who writes the shift schedule tries to give some decent weekend time to people with families, whether it was elderly parents, small kids, or, apparently, newlyweds. It doesn't always work out that way, but Rory gets home on Saturday afternoon with the blissful knowledge that unless all hell breaks loose at the hospital, no one's going to need him until Monday.

He gets beer on his way home; Amy orders Chinese. They eat on the sofa, raucously mocking the terrible action film showing on Channel 5. He laughs and laughs at Amy's awful American accent as she impersonates the hero, whose solution to every crisis is apparently to take his shirt off.

"This plot makes absolutely no sense," he protests halfway through ( ... )
