surprise serious!ficiambickilometerOctober 15 2010, 21:19:40 UTC
"Where's Ray?" Benton Fraser asks upon entering the building. Outside cars are rushing and he nearly got hit by a taxi -- still not used to these American cities -- and inside he can't see his partner anyway.
"There's been a complication," says the newcomer. "I'm Ray."
Fraser stares at him. This man is nothing like Ray, with a thick head of hair and a much more cheerful demeanor. There's a weird sinking feeling in Fraser's stomach, like he already knows what he's about to hear. "You're not Ray. Ray Vecchio? He used to follow me around and save me from crazy Americans."
"I'm Ray," not-Ray insists. "There's been a complication."

"So, I have this bucket, a mop. I have a red uniform. With boots. And Marigolds. And my wolf can bury everything that's too big or too stinky to be swept under the fake grass. I don't see your problem."
"The problem is... ah, how can I explain this? You're just one person--"
"--I have a wolf."
"--One-person-and-a-wolf, then. You can't possibly be responsible for the sanitation of the entire United States!"

"You said that already," Fraser tells him.
Not-Ray stares at him for a moment. "I'm sorry."

"...and if I say 'please'?"
"...oh, all right."
