Gus isn't entirely sure what to do or say when they call him up on stage with Jason to accept his ribbon. Jason is grinning and jumping up and down and high-fiving their bunkmates as he walks by.
Everyone except Shawn high-fives him back. And when Gus walks by, Shawn turns away entirely, arms crossed, face set in a scowl.
Gus is torn. Because, my god, he won! He's never won anything at camp before, not in all the years he's been going here, Shawn at his side. It's because Shawn's been at his side, really, because Gus has never had the strength to stand up to Shawn before, he's never wanted to stand up to Shawn before, even though Shawn's ideas almost always crash and burn, even though, with Shawn at his side, he was never going to win anything.
That didn't seem important when he had Shawn at his side though, and he'd never really thought about why until this summer ( ... )
