So, a few people have asked if I would be ditching my planned fem theory Thursday post on misogyny at work to talk about this.

I think everything has been said several times over, by articulate and thoughtful folks.   So my plan is no.

For those of you who are interested, here are my thoughts in pseudo-concentrate.  There's likely nothing here you' ( Read more... )

Oh, yes! It TOTALLY does. You are SO RIGHT!!! I take it all back.

Again, WOW. Get a shot for that Ignorance of Privilege and How It Works sickness, 'kay? :)

I would feel so liberated giving blanket permission for a bunch of guys to touch my breasts, just so long as their (culturally meaningless and unoppressed) chests were open access too!!

There ya go. Now what would you have done if I, the straight white guy, hadn't come along to clear up your confusion? ;-)

Also, I think I'm a little sad to know my chest is culturally meaningless.

Well, that's not to say unappreciated. There is a co-opting female gaze, too, ya know. It's just not all-powerful and discourse-dominating.

I have to say, I'm glad I didn't know that this was going on. Would have put a whole different spin on the con, and one I would not have been keen on.

I'm glad he's said what he's said, and while I think banning himself from ConFusion and Penguicon next year may be a bit excessive, at least he's taking responsibility.

Well, "banning" himself seems silly ( ... )

Ferrett does seem like a pretty cool guy, and who tends to be concerned about things like male privilege and so on. But then, he's also what you would call "hyper-sexualized" and thus a poor messenger for that kind of thing.

But yeah, not exactly revolutionary.

Thanks!

But please read all of my new updates, which are meant to essentially clarify that my criticism isn't necessarily to dictate the way people at Penguicon were feeling while participating, but of the post describing it and the idea of expanding it to the rest of the congoing masses.

Something I thought about while reading your very thoughtful posts on the topic.

As one who wasn't actually there, I can't react to how people felt or what they did. I can react to how it's talked about. And while I suspect there are problematic aspects to the event itself, that's separate from the problems of the way it's been discussed. Does that make any sense at all, or have I totally fried my brain tonight?
