Ugh. You'd think that with their glowing puck disaster (which had a happy ending in the NFL), and the NBA's amazing ball bruhahah, the NHL wouldn't be so cavalier about this, but here it comes...
I would support making those calendars and/or posters. Y'know, for science.
I'm all for modernizing the materials if that'll make the players more comfortable, and even if they want to make the jerseys look more modern/footbally a la the Team USA jerseys in the Olympics ( http://www.shopusahockey.com/product_detail.asp?T1=USH+1026846N+56&SKW=USHAUTH&HDR=JERSEY if you need a reminder what they looked like). But if the players think the tight fit is going to lead to more targeted hitting and thus more injuries that's really troubling. I'm also bothered by the "oh, there's no size for the big guys" problem. It's like the league deciding any guy with smaller than size 10 feet will just have to wear his skates too big. They're expensive paid professionals, they should be provided with gear that fits.
Oh, also "the tighter fit keeps the pads on better"...uh, what? Seems like there's a pretty well-developed industry in tape and velcro products that are more appropriate for that task than the jersey.

Clearly the compromise here is to let the players keep the old uniforms but them release naked calendars or posters. :D
