I am They

I wish I could be as awesome as rax in announcing this, but I'd feel totally weird copying their schtick and I can't come up with one of my own that is half as clever. So I guess this will be kinda dry.

I have wanted to be referred to be gender-neutral pronouns for, oh, on the order of 18 years now. You may have noted in my gender timeline that I ( Read more... )

My niece has recently requested singular-they as pronoun-of-choice. Having known them since birth, and being surrounded by family members who simply Don't Get alternate pronoun sets, it's REALLY difficult to keep on top of.

Good for you. I already referred to you as "they" in a recent post (I forget whether on here or elsewhere) and will continue to do so. Please do gently nudge me if I forget, and I'll make sure to tell boyziggy (though if you also posted on FB, which I'm generally avoiding, he'll probably see it there).

I am tempted to request the same for myself, but the not-female in me is so overwhelming right now that I'm more interested in people just not using female pronouns rather than insisting on neutral ones. i.e. if forced into a binary choice, I'd personally prefer male pronouns, as my sex (not gender) identity is more masculine than neutral. I should make a public post about that soon.

ETA: I know this is a locked post so I should ask: If I do make a public post about my own preferred pronouns, may I refer to you by LJ handle as a friend who goes by they/them?

I actually unlocked it a bit ago specifically so that I could cross-link it to facebook (not done yet). My journal defaults to friends-locked for everything; if I don't think about it stuff ends up locked. So link away!

Excellent - I shall. I just need to ponder the wording and timing of my own post carefully given that I previously explicitly stated that no pronoun change was necessary in my case. (Though I totally support people's rights to change their preferred pronouns and even names at any time - loved the "rax 3.0" post you linked to in that regard.)
