He's... stroking the king..........isnotdarthvaderDecember 28 2008, 05:08:13 UTC
From what Anakin had heard, Palpatine was not to be trusted, but he just couldn't see the man as the evil Emperor who had nearly destroyed his entire family. Normally he would agree with his aunt Mara on such a thing, but like their arguments over the force this seemed to be a topic they both had differing opinions on

Palpatine looked up as the boy approached, a huge smile lighting up his face. "Anakin! Hello," he greeted him warmly. He took such delight in saying the boy's name! He stopped his fiddling with the chess piece.
"I haven't been here long, I was a tad early." He grimaced at the reason Anakin required the 'fresher. "How unpleasant! You have a new roommate now that you've been awarded a job, hmm? New quarters as well?"
I was going to post last night, but then didn't....isnotdarthvaderDecember 28 2008, 20:01:11 UTC
"Yeah, crew quarters are pretty much the same. My new room is so far away from where it used to be, I'm glad Reiri to give me a tour when I first got here, or I probably would have ended up exploring myself to death. I've seem to got the hang of the station, now," Anakin replied as he noted all of the pieces on the board. Pawns, bishops, rooks, he remembered all of them.
Palpatine had gotten here early. Either he expected Anakin wouldn't know where the chess board was (which would have been true) or was eager to begin the game. Luckily Anakin had managed to straighten out his sleeping schedule and had been able to get up on time.

Palpatine tended to be early for things he was looking forward to. He certainly didn't want to waste a single moment that could be spent with this boy by being carelessly late.
"Exploring wouldn't be so undesirable, would it? Though... to death -- yes, perhaps." Palpatine chuckled.
"Yes, I'm ready. If a bit rusty," he said modestly. He wondered how skilled the boy was; he would soon find out.

Maul stumbled into the media center, still unsure of his surroundings. Surveying the room as he passed through, he walked straight for a table occupied by an old man, and two boys. The old man and the boy playing a board game struck him as familiar... but the harder he searched his mind, the less he could recall.
Stopping at the table, Maul scratched at his neck, where the collar itched at him, and decided that merely staring would be just plain rude. "Excuse me, but what is you're doing there? I don't mean to be a bother, but I'm not quite sure whats really going. Or even who I am even." Maul laughed nervously, hoping to glean something useful from these strangers.

"Maul?!"
Palpatine did a doubletake. When did he get here?!
And was this "his" Maul or...
Oh Force. The boy didn't seem to remember who he was. And he couldn't get a clear sense of him in the Force... his Maul had suffered amnesia at one point as well, and it had been several years since he'd seen him.
"You... don't know who you are? What's happened to you? You don't remember me?" He did stare -- rude or not, he couldn't help it, he was so surprised to see someone familiar from Before... if not the same young Zabrak he'd known.

"Maul? my name is Maul? It rings... But no, I have no idea who I am. I have absolutely no recollection of much of anything really. Just a few very fuzzy memories, and they don't seem to mean anything to me either."
Most of those memories being unhappy memories, and they brought up feelings of anger, hate and pain. Maul didn't enjoy them, so as meaningless as they were, they remained buried.
"I'm very sorry, I don't know who you are. Could you please tell me of my life? Please tell me, tell me everything!" Maul couldn't help but feel uncomfortable under the old man's intense stare and decided it was about time he stopped rambling and begging.

"I'm afraid I don't know a lot of it," Palpatine said honestly. He noted the collar and inwardly shuddered; he truly hoped to avoid ever arousing enough suspicion to be saddled with one of those himself. Not so much for the collar itself, but for the torture it implied -- not the sort of 'torture with a payoff' that Palpatine could tolerate. "It's possible you're not from the same universe as I. I know of... two possible paths your life could have taken."
He finally recovered enough from the shock to realize that introductions were in order. "Oh, pardon my rudeness. Maul, this is Anakin, and Joshua," he said, nodding to each boy in turn. "Oh yes -- and my name is Palpatine," he added with a slight smile.

Maul felt assured that Palpatine had seemed to recover from his shock. It was intriging that this man knew of him.
"Well met gentlemen. Apparently my name is Maul." He chuckled nervously. "You mentioned universes? I'm afraid I don't understand what you mean? And two paths? I'm afraid life is a jumbled mess right now."
Maul took a moment to study the board on the table. Its simple pieces appeared scattered. But he knew better. Maybe watching would provide some insight into the game at hand.

Palpatine smiled at Maul reassuringly. "It must be terribly confusing to you. If you'd like to talk..."
He looked uncertainly at Anakin. He didn't really want to abandon their game, but it seemed highly callous to continue to play chess when this disoriented new passenger seemed to require his assistance. It was a bit of an awkward situation.
