And in the end I did end up watching due South last night, precipitating my revelation on exactly why I gravitate towards Ray Kowalski so much. A revelation which hit during "Mountie and Soul". Oy.

Okay, so you know that me and fully sensical explanations are kinda non-mixy things, right? Anyway, here's my attempt...
So I was paying close attention to this ep because of your brilliant meta, and because I've been trying to suss out the differences in relationships between Fraser and RayV and Fraser and RayK -- like what exactly is that hinge that this whole thing pivots upon, because clearly Fraser acts completely different around RayK than he did around Vecchio.
Whew. Now that that is out of the way I can get on with this. So I've come to realize that the big thing about Fraser and RayK is that Ray allows Fraser to fight with him, to be snarky and kind of an irritating asshole sometimes. Ray provides this sort of "exchange" so Fraser can act like a normal person, not completely forced into the role of Scotch Guarded Mountie. Vecchio on the other hand, well, he had the bad habit of dismissing Fraser's nonsense most of the time. Where RayK actively inquires as to what the hell Fraser's doing (and actually sits through the

I like this a lot. It's a good intra-textual explanation for the differences in Fraser from S1 to S3.
