someone please tell me why I torment myself so....

Pass the brain bleach, I've just made myself sit through that Keira Knightley version of Pride & Prejudice--you know, the one I was staying so resolutely away from? Lord, the things I do to write well-informed scholarship. Thank goodness I love the book so much otherwise I would have thought Jane Austen the worst writer who ever set pen to paper ( Read more... )

You are quite obviously a masochist. Why in the hell did you do that to yourself? How could they possibly even come anywhere close to doing the novel justice in the pre-requistie 90 min. standard movie time? No way.

Did Mr. Bennet ever realize that it was Darcy? I don't remember him doing so. I shall have to re-read, obviously. Unfortunately, the HP series and the Hobbit will be first.

Truly. I think I'm scarred for life. What's more, as I slept my brain created ways to put the horrible version in context with some of the criticism I'm working in. In dream form! Blegh!

And, yes, Mr. Bennett realizes it was Darcy when Lizzy tells him. The bit they left out of horrible version was Mrs. Bennett finding out too and thereafter glompingdoting on Darcy and talking him up as the best thing since sliced bread. Heehee. I actually might have laughed if they'd included that. Alas. And wasn't the dimple-cheeked girl who played Kitty the same actress who played Ada in last year's adaptation of Bleak House? I should check IMDB.

Oh dear. I really have to re-read the book. Mr. Bennett never finds out in the true version, and certainly Mrs. Bennett doesn't either. I missed the Bleak House unfortunately. I don't always get everything I would like to here. (or the info that it's out)

Happy dreams! :P

Aww, you weren't a fan of the uber-angst? Or the emo Elizabeth-on-a-swing scene? Geez, what sort of horrible person are you?? ;P

Still haven't seen the BBC P&P, but pretty much anything has to be better than that. Even though I'm not a huge fan of old movies too often, from what I hear, that one's the version that's actually worth it. That and the indomitable Mr. Firth.

*dons Mr. Firth icon*

I don't know how I didn't puke all over the place--my head was in my hands the entire time I watched aghast. The words, Oh God no, may also have been repeated excessively. :D

Dude, if you don't have Netflix, get yourself one of their free trials and indulge in the 1995 version--it is very, very good.

I may go and see if Rentertainment (local video store) has it.

Oh, and I forgot to mention: I, too, have a problem with actresses who are supposed to be oh-so-gorgeous, and yet are boobless. Keira is a particularly good example of such an actress. I've only really liked her in Pirates. King Arthur? No. P&P? No. Domino? No. Not so impressed as I thought I'd be, judging by PotC.

LOL! It's awful, isn't it? It's as though they deliberately went through the dialogue cutting out the punchline to every joke, and anything that might be remotely witty, and then substituted soft focus mawkishness and childish pettiness. A production that makes me terribly sorry for *Mr Collins* because of how appallingly rude all the 'good guys' are to him, and how obviously he feels it, though prevented by status from being able to say so - is a production that has got just about everything wrong.

It's terrible! The pacing didn't it help it At All either. I've never heard people race through dialogue in every single scene so much! And yes, I did feel a twinge badly for Mr. Collins--moreso in the proposal scene where he actually took his time and Keira just slapped him with quick replies which did nothing but make Elizabeth seem petty.

Also, is it just me or did it seem like they were trying to bank on some of CotBP's success in casting that Orlando look-a-like as Mr. Wickham? I was gobsmacked by Mr. Wickham's only real screen time (maligning Darcy) as he brooded rather ambiguously like Will, down to the pigtail, and tried to look pouty and confused like him too! That and the funktastic costume choice of putting Keira in a man's jacket with echoes of the Marines coat she sported for a while there at the end. :D Go on, laugh. This movie was so bad I reverted to taking note of the details (which only added to my dismay). :p

and it does actually improve on closer acquaintance.

Oh my giddy aunt, noooooooooo! Get the cross and the silver bullets! :D

And yes, there was a decided resemblance to Mr. Bloom. And this wasn't wishful thinking brought on by dismay and boredom either! Look! What's more, Mr. Bingley in the proposal scene? He was so going for a cheeky Mr. Bettany thing there. Just, no.

I thought that! About the Boooooooooooooobs. They really didn't choose her costumes well, methinks.

Honestly what do people see in Keira? She has the body of a lanky teenage boy and the acting talent of a soap star.

Her costumes were horrible--drapes or shirts and vests? O_o WTFeth. She really ought to put a clause into her contracts about her costumes.
