This guy is just adding to those american cliches, and not the good ones. It just reinforces the stereotype of arrogant, ignorant and with a great feeling of self importance. And I know that the majority of you aren't like that, this guy should be shot.

I'm not a great footie fan myself, but I do get htat loads of people love it and so I won't shoot it down. If I don't get it, its not my place to insult.

This guy does not know what he is talking about.

Email him, and email him good. *nods*

(and another thing, super power or not, you still have Bush as president. if that doesn't say something, I don't know what does - btw, not a dig at you lovely people, just a thing to him)

Should you choose to e-mail him, you might add that some of us found his article so boring that we couldn't actually get through it. That was a mindless piece of railing if I've ever seen one. I'm not much of a sports fan, but I can still see the appeal of most sports (have a liiiitttle trouble with Cricket) for other people. Would he like to share what's so great about football where they play for a total of 10 seconds, spend the next three min. setting up again, play for 10 sec....Then there's baseball where you just keep waiting and waiting and waiting for something to happen. I mean come on, at least soccer is a continuous thing. It takes a lot of endurance to get out on that field and play continuously for that long. It's a lot more exciting than the other sports mentioned. Oh, and then there's NASCAR. I've NEVER understood that one, but hey, if people want to watch it, it's their time ( ... )

So many sweeping generalizations, so much evidence of personal preference. He reminds me of Joel Stein from the L.A. Times, another certifiable idiot. Here's the deal - the local paper has an excuse that the so-called writer is an satirist. Whatever. He still deserves a thump on the head.

Um, yeah, whatever, dude.

But I don't think Pen should be the only one to write to express her irritation, nay, outrage.

We should all take the time to write. Ten letters, even if they are incoherent, make a stronger statement than one letter, however excellent.

I will say this, too: I think we need to address our letters to the EDITOR of this paper. Why email this guy? Just to complain? Nooooo. Hit him where it hurts-- his boss.

okay... those emails can be sent to: letters@pioneerpress.com.

Here's what I'm sending:

Dear Editor,

I am writing in response to Tom Powers's June 5 column entitled "Maybe non-fans do know soccer."

I would like to express my gratitude for publishing the column without any additional revision.

Had this piece been reworked to make it appear intelligent, persuasive, or representative of quality op-ed journalism (or for that matter, the American citizenry), people might have taken it seriously. It might have added to the ever-increasing perception of Americans as closed-minded isolationists. Worse, its vaguely racist tone might have damaged your publication's good name.

As it stands, however, I think the column admirably damages only one target: the average reader's respect for its author.

Sincerely,

A non-rabid, American-born-and-raised, non-wealthy, tunes-in-just-to-watch-the-last-few-matches-because-they-are-exciting-and-beautiful, barely-a-soccer-fan,

Dr. Christine Harris
