Buffy had spent her afternoon in the gym, working out in her own Magic Box-esque space and then taking a few dozen laps in the pool before browsing through the library. Who would have thought that libraries would make Buffy Summers feel all safe and homey? But they did. The smell of musty old books was like baked apples for her, helping her relax and be completely at ease ( ... )

"Buffy!" he exclaimed in response, throwing his arms around her neck and pulling her into a hug. "You don't even know how glad to see you, my favorite Buffy is the whole wide bloody world."

He was drunk. She could hear it in it voice, smell is all over his clothes and on his breath, feel it in the way he moved. But it was... wrong. He knew she didn't approve of him drinking like this, and they both remembered what had happened the last time he'd done it and she'd been around, so something must have happened to bring him to this point. Moving carefully, she tried to maneuver him into the room so she could close the door.

"Spike, what happened?" she asked firmly, trying to get hold of the situation as best she could.

"I had a such a terrible day," he said morosely, letting her lead him further into their room without a fight. "And what's worse, the soddin' whelp of all people was there to witness it."

She couldn't say anything to that. Buffy just held onto him, pressing her cheek to his hair, and took deep breaths. "I hate this place," she whispered against the bleached strands, feeling like she'd said the words a thousand times already. "We have to find a way out."

"Well it's not through the bloody basement," he mumbled, dropping his forehead to rest on her shoulder.

"If there's anything that has to be done in the basement, I'll take care of it," she offered him, though there was really no option in the matter. She didn't want him down there and she wasn't going to take no for an answer.

"Don't think I'm lettin' you go down there on your own Slayer," he said, slurring slightly, his head snapping up so he could look at her.

"But what I wanna know is why do these bleedin' things always happen to me?" he pouted, swinging back the other way on the intoxicated mood swing. "I hate goin' crazy, and basements, and this hotel, and bein' nutters in front of Harris, and hallucinatin' and everyone who isn't you."
