Spike hummed absently to himself as he walked down the hall towards his room. He had spent the afternoon and the early part of the evening reading in the library, not paying attention to just how much time had passed. When he realized that it was past the time that he and Buffy both gravitated back towards his room if they weren’t already together, he tucked the Kurt Vonnegut novel he was reading under one arm and began the journey back to his room.
Digging his key out of his back pocket he made quick work of the lock. Opening the door he started to reach out to flick on the light out of habit, but froze before he got half way there.
“What’s all this?” he asked from the door way, curiosity alit in his eyes and a small smile spreading across his lips when he saw the spread in front of him lit in the soft glow of candle light.
Buffy had been in the middle of moving the chopsticks to another position around the plates when the door open. She went completely still for a moment before turning and giving Spike a nervous smile.
"It's Date Night," she informed him in a slightly wobbly, yet bright voice. "The casual, not getting dressed up or even going out kind. So, hopefully the apocalypse won't happen before dessert," she joked, laughing weakly before crossing her arms and looking down, her dark hair cascading over her shoulder.
Buffy was nervous in the extreme. She shifted her weight to her other foot, hoping beyond hope that Spike wouldn't think it was stupid or laugh or...
He saw how nervous she was and as he glanced around the room again, warmth blossomed within his chest, unable to believe just how much trouble she had gone to, to do this for them. Crossing the room to where she was currently fidgeting, he placed a gentle kiss to her lips hoping to alleviate some of her nerves.
“This is lovely kitten. Perfect really,” he said with a genuine smile, his love pouring through his eyes. “But if you’re just trying to seduce me, it takes more than just buying me dinner I‘ll have you know. I have principles,” he said with faux seriousness. “Oh who am I kidding everyone knows I’m easy,” he joked with a cheeky wink.
"Oh, well, good thing then, cause that's totally where I was going with this!" It was said as a slightly teasing joke, but... there was a bit of truth to it, in the end. She'd set this up as a present to the two of them, but also as a way of showing Spike that she was getting to that 'Okay' point again. She was feeling comfortable with herself again, wasn't always completely terrified that he would disappear again, and she wanted to work on them now.
Grinning suddenly, she grabbed his shirt and pulled him down for a better kiss. She had gone to all that work, she deserved a decent reward for her efforts.
"No," Buffy said quickly, not wanting Spike to get the wrong impression and run with it, as he tended to do on a weekly basis. It wasn't one of his better qualities, that was for sure. "No, he didn't. I just... We talked. Really talked. And it was... We're better now than we were, but not as good as we used to be." Squeezing her eyes shut for a moment, she shook her head. "I don't really know if we'll ever be."
She shook her head again and looked at Spike with a small, sincere smile. "I miss having my friends be my friends, but, cheesy as it sounds, I'll be okay as long as you're here. If that means I have to seduce you to get you to stay," she said with a teasing smirk, "then I guess I don't really have a choice."
“You gotta do what you gotta do,” Spike shrugged, the innocent look on his face doing nothing to hide the roguish mirth in his eyes.
“Seriously though,” he said his mood becoming more solemn, “It’s good you to talked after the way things were left in the pool, I’m sorry things have gotten strained, pet. There’s no love lost between myself and Harris,” he said honestly, they both knew it so there was no point in trying to hide it. “But I know how much the boy used to mean to you.” And he was sincerely sorry, while he didn’t really care if Xander took a walk and got lost in the desert, he knew how hard it to come to grips with the disillusionment that came when you realize that the people you care about are no longer the people you used to know and things can never go back to the way they used to be. “And I’m not going anywhere, no matter what,” he felt the need to add, although that’s all he had been saying for weeks.
Buffy didn't have anything to say to that. She did know all of that about Spike, the dislike the two men had for each other, the emotions that had been left behind by experiences she didn't quite know the details of, the fact that he'd never willingly leave her. It had taken a while for that last one to really sink in, but now she didn't give it a moment of thought. It wasn't a promise, it was a fact.
Smiling at him, she took another sip of wine and sighed happily. "The food's good, right?" she asked with that bit of Date Night Nervousness peeking through. "Oh, and I've got a special dessert, even." She had to remember the plan: keep things light and happy and try not to kill this date like all the others.
“The food’s excellent,” Spike reassured her, dipping an egg roll in soy sauce. “A special dessert? Color me intrigued. I don’t suppose that factors into that whole seducin’ me thing does it?” he questioned playfully, one eyebrow arched. “Because I’ve been known to play hard to get. I can be very difficult to woo,” he warned with mock seriousness, proud of himself for being able to keep a straight face.
Buffy's jaw dropped at she stared at him as if he'd just said Manolo Blahniks weren't the most gorgeous thing on the planet next to herself. "I wouldn't say butcher," she protested. "I... tweak it. Some would say I improve it."
Spike considered that for a moment, his face the very picture of serious contemplation. “No…” he decided finally, “I’m still going to have to go with butcher. Before I got the hang of it, I scarcely knew what you were talking about half the bleedin' time. Needed a Slayer to English dictionary,” he teased with a grin.
She narrowed her eyes at him and nudged him with the toe of her shoe. "Consider it a battle strategy," she told him with a hint of false menace. "Throw the enemy on a loopy roller coaster of crazy Buffy words and watch their heads spin!"
“And here I thought that’s what those microscopic skirts you used to wear were for,” he retorted shamelessly. “Now those, coupled with a couple high kicks you're so fond of were distracting.”
Buffy tilted her head to give him better access, her eyes fluttering closed as she remembered how wonderful all of this could be. "Hey, who's doing the seducing thing here?" she protested weakly, her hands roaming across his shoulders. "Not that you're doing a bad job or anything..."
“If you’re complaining,” he said lowly as nibbled at her pulse point, and his hands teased the strip of skin that was exposed from where her shirt had climbed up her torso, “I can stop.”
Her fingers slipped under the collar of his shirt and scratched at his skin while his teeth worked at hers. "Do it and I really will stake your pulse-ridden butt," she threatened.
“Wouldn’t want that,” he chuckled, the sound rumbling deep in his chest. “That would be a definite mood killer,” he joked even as a shudder trailed down his spine at the feel of her nails against the hypersensitive skin of his neck, a holdover from his days as a vampire.
