"I'm not sure what I believe," said Handy. "He called himself 'the Beast,' he had certain...powers...and he looked like the devil - horns, hundreds of feet tall, all that - but I can't exactly trust what he told me about himself." He tried to grin at Cordelia, to make it a joke, but the truth was that the memory was unsettling and he didn't want to dwell on it.

"You said you met the other Doctor?" he asked, wanting to change the topic.

"Sonic screwdriver," grinned Handy, holding it out so she could see it.

"Wherever we are, we've been removed from temporal causality," he explained. "And, obviously, we're in some kind of reality bubble, since no one's been able to leave. The question of where we are and how far we've been moved may not have any meaning, at least according to human concepts of distance. Anyone who has the kind of technology to bend the laws of physics far enough to make this place isn't going to be very bothered if they have to move a hotel."

Cordelia looked through the drawer while the Doctor spoke, not really understanding much of what he said. Well, there was a basic understanding, but it just kind of hurt her head.

"Huh," she said. "There are papers in here, but they're not legible. They must be really old. It looks like the ink has faded off them."

Handy stared off into space, contemplating the mechanics of the hotel's existence.

"Hmm?" He pulled one of the papers from the filing cabinet. It was, as Cordelia had said, illegible. "Let's see if there's anything newer in the other drawers."

The next drawer down, too, was stuck shut. Handy aimed the sonic screwdriver at it and turned it on once more. A minute later, though, the screwdriver was still whirring away seemingly without effect, and the drawer was still shut.

"...or not."

"I'm surprised it even worked the one time," Cordelia said, waving her stake at the sonic screwdriver.

"Nothing else seems to work around here. My cell phone ran out of batteries a long time ago, but I couldn't get any signal on it. And my laptop is pretty much useless."

"It should still work here," said Handy, looking at the screwdriver with a pained expression. "It's just a matter of sonic vibrations." He slapped the screwdriver against his palm a few times and tried again. Nothing. "I, ah...haven't quite finished it, though."

"You built that?" Cordelia said, impressed. "You should meet my friend, Fred. You two would probably have a lot to talk about. She's a bit of a genius."

"Oh yes." Handy gave up on the sonic screwdriver and put it back in his pocket. He grinned. "Sounds like someone I'd like."

Cordelia gave up on the filing cabinet and moved to the far end of the room, where a bunch of dusty old stoves were lined against the wall.

"As far as basements go, I'd have to say this one seems to be pretty disappointing," she said.
