"That all depends, Sam. You gonna let me and Bobby in or are we gonna stand and talk out here in the hallway?" Her heart sank utterly at Sam's pale skin, the dark hollows beneath his eyes. Whatever was happening to Sam, it was getting worse. She was torn between the desire to tug him into an embrace and slap him until his teeth rattled.

They were family. Family relied on each other. They had to.

Dean rose up the stairs as he heard Ellen's voice and instantly assumed a position behind both her and Bobby before his own door. His expression was neutral, but level. Whatever was going on was important enough to drag him away from working in the infirmary. He smelled a little to much like antiseptics and the pharmaceutical cleansers.

"What's going on Sam?" He asked, fighting not to take that authoritative tone that mimicked their father. It never made Sam cooperative.

Bobby decided to let Ellen and Dean do the talking for the moment. If they got down to hugging and slapping, he'd volunteer for the slapping half. Hugging wasn't really his gig.

Something had to give, though. It was obvious that whatever was going on with Sam, he wasn't handling it well on his own.
