Jareth wandered the library with a slow, deliberate pace, running gloved fingers along the spines of books as he passed. He often walked among the shelves of books. He met the most interesting people in the library. In particular, the fascinating young girl Dawn.

He soon spotted an unfamiliar face, passing by the end of the aisle he was walking. He watched her go, following at a distance, coming to a stop behind her, leaning casually on the end of a shelving unit. She was by far the youngest person he had seen here.

"Such a lovely young girl. Do your parents know where you are?"

Alice was not startled when the strange man appeared behind her and began to speak. However, she had been caught off-guard by his sudden inquiry, as she had, at the time, been guessing on words that might rhyme with 'nice'. So far, she had managed 'spice', 'thrice', and 'lice' -- with the latter being an unpleasant, and therefore unusable word to put into any poem ( ... )

Jareth smiled at her perspicacious observation.

"Sometimes I'm an owl," he confirmed. "Though I can't change in this place," he admitted.

He reached out and grasped her hand, turning it to kiss the back of it lightly.

"My name is Jareth. I'm the Goblin King."

Alice was somewhat surprised when the Goblin King decided to kiss her hand rather than shake it, but she was perfectly delighted to learn that he was royalty ( ... )
